Earthwork Volume Estimation Workflow
Earthwork volume estimates are useful only when their accuracy can be explained. The workflow therefore records the survey method, control points, processing settings, comparison surface, and expected error from data capture through to the final calculation.
Overview
- Volume accuracy is bounded by surface accuracy and by the density of the points that define each surface.
- Cut and fill must reference a stated design surface and a stated datum, agreed before processing.
- Ground control placement, not flight altitude, is usually the dominant error term on a flat site.
- Report the same area boundaries each period, or the deltas are not comparable.
