Model Adaptation and Evaluation
Model adaptation is an evaluation problem. Without a fixed evaluation set and a stated metric, improvement claims are not comparable.
Overview
- Freeze a held-out evaluation set drawn from the customer's own site conditions before any tuning starts.
- Choose metrics that match the operational cost: misses and false alarms rarely cost the same.
- Evaluate per class and per condition (day, night, season, surface type), not only as a global average.
- Re-evaluate after every change, and keep the evaluation set out of the training data.
