Designing Annotation Systems
Annotation design decides what the model can ever learn and what the results can ever mean. It is a requirements exercise before it is a labelling exercise.
Overview
- Define classes by the decision they support, not by visual similarity.
- Write an annotation guide with boundary cases — ambiguity between annotators is the largest single source of label noise.
- Measure inter-annotator agreement; if two trained people disagree, the class definition is not finished.
- Plan for class changes: a scheme that cannot be revised will be abandoned.
