Choosing Edge vs Server Processing
Edge or server is a question about where the constraint is: bandwidth, latency, data residency, or the cost of a mistake made before anyone could intervene.
Overview
- Bandwidth: if the raw data cannot leave the site, the decision has to be made on site.
- Latency: check whether you need the answer during the flight or the next morning; most workflows need the latter.
- Data residency: in some jurisdictions this alone determines the architecture.
- Operational: server-side models can be updated frequently; edge devices need a tested update path.
