Recording Shoreline Litter Distribution
Shoreline litter mapping is a density product, not a count. What matters is where litter concentrates and how that changes after a cleanup or a storm.
Overview
- Report as density along the shoreline segment rather than as an absolute item count.
- Keep segment boundaries fixed between surveys so that change is measurable.
- Separate litter from natural wrack and vegetation; mislabelling natural material undermines the dataset.
- Tide state at capture changes the visible shoreline width and must be recorded.
