Assisted Detection of Floating Debris
Floating debris screening works best where debris accumulates predictably — against banks, upstream of structures, at bends. Searching open water is far less productive.
Overview
- Fly the accumulation zones, not the whole water body; coverage should follow hydraulic logic.
- Distinguish mobile debris from anchored vegetation; the response is completely different.
- Sun glint and windrows both create false positives on water — capture conditions belong in the record.
- Volume estimates from imagery are indicative only; collection planning should not treat them as measured.
