Shoreline Change Analysis
Shoreline change requires an agreed definition of "the shoreline" before any measurement can be compared across time.
Overview
- Fix the indicator being traced — waterline, vegetation line, or top of bank — and use the same one every time.
- Tide, surge and river flow all move the instantaneous waterline; compare at a stated stage, not at arbitrary times.
- Seasonal beach profile change can exceed the long-term trend; use multi-epoch data before drawing a conclusion.
- State the measurement uncertainty alongside any erosion or accretion rate.
