Thermal Imaging Application Technology Update
The thermal sensor is no longer the weak link in 2026. Capture conditions are — and they are the part most specifications leave out.
Overview
- 640x512 is now the mainstream professional tier, with 1280x1024 available at a large premium. Detector resolution has stopped being the buying question; radiometric accuracy and stability have taken its place.
- Radiometric output is what turns an image into a record. Where a report needs temperature values, the module must be radiometric and the accuracy must match the tolerance — typically plus or minus 2 degrees C or 2 per cent at industrial grade.
- Capture conditions carry as much weight as the sensor: time of day, asset load, emissivity assumption, viewing angle, wind and recent weather. Two flights of the same asset can disagree for reasons that have nothing to do with the camera.
- Trend lines published in 2026 point to lower NETD, shutterless architectures and onboard hotspot detection. Onboard detection reduces bandwidth, but it does not remove the need to record the conditions behind the measurement.
Collected 9 October 2026 from public OEM and market sources. Montline states thermal payload specifications only where they can be evidenced; emissivity and load assumptions belong in the capture record, not in the brochure.
