Observations from Drone Logistics Pilots
Drone delivery crossed from pilot to paid service in 2026 on two product classes — retail parcels and medical items — while every operator in the US still waits on the same rule.
Overview
- Scale is now measurable: one operator passed 2.5 million commercial deliveries with about one million in the previous year, and by mid-2026 most of its daily global volume was inside the United States.
- Retail is the volume story. A large US retailer crossed one million drone deliveries from 66 stores across four states in May 2026, averaging about 23 minutes from order to drop, with 40 per cent of that million flown in a single quarter.
- Payload limits are small and worth internalising: roughly 2.5 lb, 5 lb and 8 lb depending on the operator. Anything heavier is not a delivery aircraft, it is a logistics aircraft, and the rules differ.
- Retreats are part of the record too: operators exited Italy, Ireland and Australia during 2025–2026, in each case citing regulation or planning rather than aircraft performance.
Figures collected 9 October 2026 from operator releases and trade reporting. Operators publish to different definitions and different dates; check the definition before comparing two numbers.
