Prototype vs Production Configuration
Prototype and production units are different machines with the same shape. Assuming otherwise is how a working prototype becomes a production problem.
Overview
- Prototypes are usually hand-fitted, individually tuned and undocumented; production is the opposite.
- Decide early which tolerances, connectors and fasteners are production-representative.
- Configuration management starts at the prototype stage, not at the production order.
- If the prototype cannot be built twice the same way, the design is not finished.
