Why Payload Power Budget Matters
A payload power budget is the document that stops a payload from being discovered to be unaffordable in flight.
Overview
- Budget by phase: take-off, transit, on-task, return — the peak is rarely where you expect.
- Include the converter losses and the idle draw of every device, not only the ones doing work.
- Keep a reserve for the platform's own systems and for cold-weather battery derating.
- Re-do the budget whenever a payload is added, because it is the additions that break it.
