Multirotor Configuration for Power Facility Inspection
Power facility inspection is a close-range, high-detail job. The platform is chosen for stability at 3–8 m from the asset, not for area coverage.
Overview
- Separate the tasks: insulator strings, fittings and corrosion need different standoff distances and different optics.
- Thermal and visible should be flown in the same sortie so the same framing is recorded twice.
- Plan the flight around energised-asset rules first; the airframe choice follows from the standoff you are allowed.
- Record which asset each image belongs to at capture time — retro-matching imagery to a tower number is expensive.
What this configuration has to achieve
Power facility inspection is about producing a finding someone can act on, tied to a specific asset. A thermal image of a connector is only useful if the reader knows which connector, on which tower, captured under what load and ambient conditions. That means the configuration is not just an aircraft and a camera — it is aircraft, sensor, metadata capture and a filing convention.
In practice the deciding question is stand-off distance versus image quality. Substation work needs the aircraft to hold position close to equipment; transmission spans need it to travel and revisit the same points across epochs. These are different configurations, and pretending one aircraft does both well is how inspection programmes lose credibility internally.
Thermal capture conditions decide the result
Thermal readings are a screening signal, not a certified fault diagnosis. The value depends on when the image was taken: time of day, solar loading, the electrical load on the asset at that moment, wind, and the emissivity assumption baked into the reading. Two images of the same connector taken at different loads are not comparable, and the comparison is where most mis-diagnosis comes from.
So the configuration has to record conditions alongside the image. We treat capture metadata as part of the deliverable rather than an afterthought: asset identifier, position, time, load where available, ambient conditions, and the emissivity setting. Confirmation remains a separate inspection step.
Platform and payload pairing
For routine transmission and distribution patrol where visible and thermal are needed in the same framing, the pairing matters more than either sensor. Capturing both in one sortie at the same position is what makes the pair usable for a judgement; fly twice and the framing will not match. See M-15, which is arranged around P-EO plus P-TIR carried together.
Where the work is confined-space or ground-level — substation rooms, cable tunnels, areas an aircraft should not enter — a ground platform is the safer answer than a smaller aircraft. See G-100.
What to write into the acceptance criteria
State the deliverable, not the equipment: paired visible and thermal imagery filed against asset identifiers, with capture metadata. State the conditions under which the survey is run. State what happens on a suspected finding — confirmation by a separate step, not by the automated output.
Avoid acceptance criteria that name a temperature threshold without naming the conditions. A threshold without conditions is not testable, and an untestable criterion turns acceptance into an argument.
